Sketchbook

I started drawing scenes from life and imagination as a youth, inspired by the deft hand of my father, Darrel, senior. Later at Syracuse University, Prof. Tadeuz Janowski gave me a big boost in my favorite class, drawing and design analysis. Later Olga Barmine of the University of Virginia recommended switching from clunky large drawing pads to pocket-sized sketchbooks. Now, late in life, I have filled many. Here are copies of a few that I like to look at, again and again, pen and ink…straight out of the little books.

As a former Chairman of the Washington Building Congress and founder of the Builders Ball and the Craftsmanship Star Awards, I continue to contribute to WBC and to show up at events. You can take advantage of this standing offer:  for a $400 contribution to the WBC Craftsman Hall of Fame, I will visit your home in the DC area and make an “en plein air” ink sketch suitable for framing.
