Having Family Fun on the Summer LAWN at the National Building Museum

We support the National Building Museum through participation, contributions, fundraising and by inviting colleagues to join.

Watching children (and adults) rolling down the vast sloping green scape, laughing and giggling was one of many unique and extraordinary experiences of the summer. The National Building Museum hosts educational programs and special events all year long.

Annual Stanley I. Hallet Architectural Sketchbook Awards

A celebration of sketching...

The distinguished jury, organized by Darrel Rippeteau, AIA included: Michael Gick, Carlos Cecchi, Julio Bermudez, Deborah Ratner Salzberg and Bill Kline evaluating the architectural student sketchbooks May 10, 2019.

Washington, DC, May 24, 2019 – The Stanley I. Hallet Award recognizes Catholic University School of Architecture and Planning Students, who submit a sketchbook compiled while in the field. The final selection of sketchbook awards is based upon the overall quality of the graphic medium employed as well as the depth and extent of the observations made.

Architectural free-hand sketching is often crucial to the creation of major commercial development projects.  The architect’s early images, sketched out quickly, can ignite the imaginations of many, leading to the planning and construction of successful projects.  I have been inspired by the deft sketching performances of top architects in the conceptual stage of numerous jobs, and I commend Stanley Hallet and his colleagues for encouraging this skill among students today.
— Deborah Ratner Salzberg, Chairman, Brookfield Properties, DC Region

This year a fabulously successful developer joined our team of sketchbook judges: Deborah Ratner Salzberg, chairman of Brookfield Properties in the national capital region. Ms. Salzberg praised the tradition of creating early, quick images for future projects and she emphasized the VALUE of sketching in her company’s operations. She described how her favorite architects help get major projects off the ground with evocative and informative preliminary sketches. The distinguished jury, organized by Darrel Rippeteau, AIA included: Michael Gick, Carlos Cecchi, Julio Bermudez, Deborah Ratner Salzberg and Bill Kline.

Darrel Rippeteau, AIA presented the Stanley I Hallet Awards to this year’s winners of the competition pictured above:  First Prize: Sebastian VanDerbeck, First Runner up: Bridget Tweedy, Second Runner up: Patrick Suarez. See their sketchbook drawings below. The Hallet Awards ceremony for advancing excellence in architectural sketching was held Friday, May 17th, 2019 at Crough Hall, Catholic University School of Architecture.

This is the 9th year for the Stanley I. Hallet Architectural Sketchbook Awards, made possible through the founding grant of Darrel Rippeteau, AIA.

Architects conceptualize and visualize the future through their ability to sketch out their ideas and present to investors and developers in the marketplace. Sketch the future and succeed in your life’s work.
